In this article we examine some of the more popular open source blogging software packages available. BlogSec gets an overview picture of whats out there and whats being used.

According to Wikipedia, there are 35 listed open source, free blogging software packages, and these will be the blogs on which we focus.

This initial research will help us plan future projects and guide us as to where our resources and efforts should be focused. Our primary focus currently is WordPress, however, BlogSec hopes to span out in the future to cover other areas of the blogosphere.

The table consists of 35 popular blogging solutions ordered by page rank. I did begin adding a vulnerability count to each package, but it turned out to be a fairly lengthy process. . . to be continued.

Hi Dave,

I personally use WP and grab your feed for news & info. I’ve used Drupal, bBlog and b2evolution. Personally, I’ve found WP to be the best and the widely used self hosted platform.

Great idea Dave; looking forward to the vul count for these packages, I’m sure that it’ll make an interesting read

Big Dan, are you sure your not Matt Mullenweg in disguise? :)

Sarah, thanks. I did start but there are some tricky bits and peices. For instance, WordPress at Page Rank 9 will most certainly have had more eyes on the code, hence more vulnerabilities, verse a Page rank 6 blogging software.
